The most common reason why you can face these problems is given below-

Reason 1: Loose Screw

The most common reason why cordless drill chuck is stuck is due to loose screws. There is the main screw, the T20 Torx head bolt.

When the bolt is loosened up it prevents the mobility of the teeth. And without mobility, the drill is of no use.

Solution: Tighten the Loose Screw

Firstly, grab a small nose brush. Check for dust, excessive oil, or junk. And clean them with that brush.

Then grab a screwdriver that matches the t20 Torx head bolt. Next, open up the screw with the screwdriver.

You should rotate the screw clockwise. After opening the screw, you have to clean the screw. Because it may be dirty or excessively oily. You can use soapy water and a brush to clean the screw.

After cleaning the screw, add the screw back to the chuck. Carefully rotate the screw with the screwdriver anti-clockwise.

Reason 02: keyless Chuck

Now, if the above one is mainly the issue, check if your chuck is a keyless one. If your chuck is keyless and it’s stuck, you can’t open it with DIY manners. You need to console a professional or you need to replace it.

But you can still try out the replacement process yourself. We’ve provided the step-by-step process.

Solution: Replace the Keyless Chuck

Here’s how you can replace your chuck by following these steps accordingly.

Firstly, remove the head screw. You can use a rubber hammer if needed. Rotate the chuck clockwise, it will lose the chuck.

Use an Allen wrench to loosen the chuck. You should hold it above. And hammer it in a manner that the chuck rotates clockwise.

Now, remove the chuck and check for any damage. Replace the old chuck with the new one. To do so, add all the screws and accessories together.

That will do the work.

But if your chuck is fine. Or it doesn’t need to be replaced; there might be another thing causing this problem.

Reason 3: Gear Case Problem

If you see the motor is spinning but the chuck is not mobilized. Or you can see the chuck is rapidly spinning on and off. Then you can be sure that the problem is not the chuck. Instead, the problem can be somehow the gear case.

Solution: Clean or Replace the Gear Case

Sometimes the gear case is easily fixable by proper cleaning. If cleaning doesn’t work you have to replace the gear case.

Here are some easy steps for you to follow to remove and replace the gear case.

Firstly open up the end cap of the drill. Then loosen up the brush spring of the drill. Remove the head screw with a screwdriver rotating the screwdriver clockwise.

Now, make sure the transmission is on the lowest setting. If it is, insert your alien wrench into the drill chuck. This way you can tighten your chuck down on the wrench. Then use a hammer to loosen it.

Next, discard all the screws that secure the cover with the housing. Remove the screws that secure that transmission clutch assembly as well. Now, just remove the cover along with the transmission clutch assembly. Pull out the gear selector switch.

Remove the old motor from the old transmission. Re-install with a new motor into the new transmission. Replace the gear case with a new one and attach the motor to the case.

Re-install the gear case and motor back inside the house switching.

Then reconnect the switch of the gear selector and put on the case cover. But ensure each and every wiring is properly placed inside the housing’s channel.  Put back the transmission clutch assembly.

After that, snap back the brush spring in its place and put back the rear cover. Re-install the chuck hand and also put back the head screw.

Reason 4: Rusted and Gummy Drill Chuck

After using your drill chuck for a long time, it will get dirty. Water and sticky substances can corrode your chuck in no time. Your drill chuck will become rusty and gummy due to water and other liquid substances.

This will eventually make it super difficult to work with the drill chuck. For example, it won’t open or close properly.

Solution: Apply WD-40

To fix the gummy, rusty, and sticky drill chuck, use WD-40. Clean the dirt and sticky substances with this.

You can spray the chuck with WD-40. After spraying the chuck, you’ll surely be able to open or close it easily. But remember, to spray again after each time you use the drill.

This will help you to prevent rust from occurring on the chuck in the near future. So, your drill chuck will be protected.

Reason 5: Rusted Jaws

By the way, sometimes you might see rust on the jaws. These basically clasp the drill chuck onto your drill bit.

So, when the jaws are rusty, they won’t be able to do their work properly. As a result, the chuck will get stuck.

Solution: Hammer with A Mallet

Before hammering, spray a bit of WD-40 on the rusted area. This will help to remove a bit of the rust. And make the jaws stay in a closed position.

Now, grab a mallet that’s made of wood and position it on the rusty jaws. Hammer on the jaws gently. This will help you to open the jaws and the chuck. As a result, you can use your drill with no problem!
